Circuit Splendor: Urban Android Mosaics, Series 4

“The grid becomes portrait. Structure and face share one surface.”

Series 4 forecloses any remaining distance between figure and ground. The android portrait here does not sit against a background field; it is constituted by the same visual material as the space surrounding it. Grid becomes face becomes grid: the viewer must negotiate where the subject ends and the environment begins. JB uses this formal ambiguity to raise the series' central question most directly: what distinguishes an entity assembled from patterns from the patterns that constitute any environment? Series 4 refuses to answer.
