Stella is the most formally resolved portrait in JB's celestial series, a figure that has arrived rather than one still in process. The palette is warm but controlled: deep gold, rich ochre, and the kind of violet that appears at the horizon just after the sun has fully set. JB's composition here is unusually static for the studio's figure work, the subject settled in the frame with a permanence that reads as chosen rather than imposed.
