“Mortality wrapped in meme-money. The vanitas for a digital age.”
Technicolor Skull in $DOG Wrappings is the studio's most deliberately subversive body of work. The skull, that oldest memento mori, is here dressed in the visual language of internet culture: the $DOG cryptocurrency aesthetic, candy chromatics, and the ironic visual grammar of meme finance. JB approaches this collision with genuine formal care, not parody but synthesis. The tension between the skull's historical weight and the contemporary iconography it wears is the series' subject. These works belong simultaneously to a centuries-old tradition of mortality painting and to the most ephemeral visual culture of the present moment. That impossible combination is precisely the point.
